About the Workshop
This workshop is for artists at every level who want to explore encaustic collagraph printmaking and create distinctive prints. What is an encaustic collagraph print? Collagraph printmaking is a method of print making using a printmaking plate with a low relief surface. With encaustic collagraphy, we create the plates using wax on a rigid surface then print using a press to pull a collagraph print. Even if you are new to this type of printmaking but would like to experiment with it, you are welcome to join us.
The agenda for the two days will include:
- A review of the basic process using wax, tools, and materials like carborundum
- Pulling prints with multiple plates and colors
- Exquisite corpse exercise
- Using different papers for printing
- As always, individual work time
The equipment, supplies, and many materials needed for the workshop are provided. You may bring any tools or materials to create texture for your plates, as well as any special papers you might like to experiment with in printing.
About the Instructor
Melissa Rian is an artist from metro Detroit, primarily working in Encaustic. Over the last few years she has been painting with encaustic and mixed media. She has begun to incorporate encaustic into her printmaking as well as branching into dimensional works with encaustic. Having earned a printmaking degree from Wayne State University, bringing encaustic into printmaking is a natural progression for her. For Melissa the feeling and the visual aspects of memory are what feeds her inspiration.
